Royals Erase Three-Run Deficit With Walk-Off in the Ninth

KC def. ATH · August 18, 2026 · Final: Royals 4, Athletics 3

Kansas City trailed Oakland 3-0 heading into the seventh, a hole that had been building since the first inning and deepened through the top of the sixth.

The Royals got their first run in the bottom of the seventh when first baseman Vinnie Pasquantino drove a sharp line drive to right for a double, scoring Jac Caglianone to make it 3-1.

That's where it stayed heading into the bottom of the ninth, with Kansas City's win probability sitting at 4.7 percent — trailing by two, three outs from a loss.

Royals pinch-hitter Tyler Tolbert changed the equation. Tolbert sent a ground ball to left, and John Rave scored, then Michael Massey scored, tying the game at 3-3.

With the crowd still processing the tie, Kansas City shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. stepped in. Witt Jr. lofted a fly ball to left, Carter Jensen scored, and the Royals had the lead. Final: Kansas City 4, Oakland 3.
