Mitch Keller threw 75 pitches over six scoreless innings Wednesday in San Diego and walked off to a tie game. Pittsburgh Pirates manager Don Kelly then handed the ball to his bullpen — and the Padres scored eight unanswered runs to complete an 8-2 win.

That sequence is the whole story.

Keller allowed three hits, struck out four, and walked one. At 12.5 pitches per inning, he was operating as efficiently as a starter can. The sixth ended clean: no traffic, no stress, nothing that suggested he was losing his grip. The scoreboard read 0-0.

Justin Lawrence entered for Pittsburgh to start the seventh at a leverage index of 1.80 — the highest-stakes moment of the game to that point. San Diego Padres shortstop Xander Bogaerts reached immediately on a throwing error by Pirates shortstop Nick Gonzales, and Padres third baseman Miguel Andujar followed with a line-drive double to left fielder Jake Mangum, moving Bogaerts to third. Padres outfielder Nick Castellanos then doubled on a sharp fly ball to left, scoring both Bogaerts and Andujar to give San Diego a 2-0 lead. That was the decisive swing — two runs on a single play, a lead Pittsburgh never recovered. Castellanos stayed on second, and Padres catcher Luis Campusano grounded out before Padres infielder Jake Cronenworth launched a home run to right center, scoring Castellanos and pushing the lead to 4-0. Lawrence struck out the final two batters, but the damage was done: four runs on three hits and an error in one inning.

Pittsburgh answered in the bottom of the seventh. Pirates infielder Konnor Griffin hit a sacrifice fly to left fielder Ramón Laureano, scoring Nick Yorke, and Pirates catcher Joey Bart followed with a ground-ball single to center fielder Jackson Merrill that scored Nick Gonzales. The Pirates pulled within 4-2, but that was as close as they would get.

Pirates reliever José Urquidy handled the eighth without damage, working around a Bogaerts single. The ninth unraveled. A fielding error by Pirates shortstop Griffin put Castellanos aboard, and Campusano lined a sharp double to left to score Bryce Johnson and make it 5-2. After Cronenworth struck out, Laureano singled to left and Padres shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. followed with a ground-ball single to left that scored Campusano and moved Laureano to second. Then Merrill reached on a fielder's choice as Laureano scored on a throwing error by first baseman Nick Yorke, extending the lead to 7-2. Bogaerts struck out to end the inning, but a final run crossed during that sequence to make the final 8-2. Urquidy's two-inning line: four runs, four hits, three strikeouts, and no walks.

The bullpen allowed eight runs total. Keller allowed zero.

At 75 pitches through six scoreless innings, Keller had not shown a single reason to come out. The one walk, the manageable pitch count, the clean final inning — none of it pointed toward the exit. Whether he had a seventh inning in him, and what the Pirates' seventh might have looked like with him on the mound instead of Lawrence, is a question Don Kelly can't answer now.
