Athletics Erase Four-Run Hole With Walk-Off Butler Homer to Beat Seattle

ATH def. SEA · September 13, 2026 · Final: Athletics 8, Mariners 7

Oakland trailed 6-2 after five innings, a hole deep enough that the Athletics' win probability had sunk to 5.9% as they headed to the plate in the bottom of the sixth.

The first two runs came easily enough. Athletics third baseman Zack Gelof opened the scoring in the bottom of the first with his 18th home run, a fly ball to left. Lawrence Butler, Oakland's right fielder, followed with a solo shot to right center, his 15th, and Oakland led 2-0.

Seattle answered. Mariners outfielder Randy Arozarena hit a two-run homer in the top of the third to tie it, and the Mariners kept building through the fourth — a sacrifice fly from catcher Jhonny Pereda, an RBI single from shortstop J.P. Crawford, another RBI single from Arozarena — to go ahead 5-2. A bases-loaded walk to Pereda in the top of the fifth pushed it to 6-2.

Oakland's rally started in the bottom of the seventh. A walk to Gelof scored Alika Williams, cutting it to 6-3. Butler then grounded into a fielder's choice, but the play scored Henry Bolte to make it 6-4. Then designated hitter Shea Langeliers lined a single to right — deflected by pitcher Seranthony Domínguez — that scored Jeff McNeil and Gelof to tie it at 6.

Arozarena answered again in the top of the eighth with a solo homer, his 25th, to put Seattle back in front 7-6.

Oakland came to bat in the bottom of the ninth still trailing. Gelof reached and scored on Butler's walk-off, a two-run homer to right center — his 16th of the year. Oakland Athletics 8, Seattle Mariners 7.
