Royals Erase Four-Run Deficit With Massive Eighth-Inning Surge

Kansas City trailed 5-1 after Oakland's Jeff McNeil and Zack Gelof each drove in runs in the top of the first, and the Athletics extended that lead to four in the top of the fifth when McNeil and Gelof connected again, along with Henry Bolte's run-scoring single. The Royals' win probability sat at 7.2% as late as the bottom of the seventh.
Kansas City first baseman Vinnie Pasquantino kept the Royals alive with a solo home run — his seventh of the year — in the bottom of the sixth, cutting Oakland's lead to 5-2. But the real turn came two innings later.
The bottom of the eighth started the kind of rally that reshapes a box score. Royals third baseman Maikel Garcia scored when Pasquantino lined a single to right, making it 5-3. Center fielder Kyle Isbel then grounded a single to left, scoring Pasquantino and pulling Kansas City within 5-4, with Salvador Perez moving to third and Tyler Tolbert to second. Left fielder Isaac Collins tied it at five with a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Perez.
Then Kansas City right fielder John Rave lined a sharp double to right field. Tyler Tolbert scored. Kyle Isbel scored. Bobby Witt Jr. scored. Three runs on one swing, and the Royals led 8-5 for the first time all night. Garcia added to the cushion moments later, singling home Rave to push it to 9-5.
Oakland answered in the top of the ninth when Max Muncy hit a two-run home run to center field, scoring Donovan Walton and closing the gap to 9-7. But Kansas City held on.
