Phillies Erase Five-Run Deficit, Take Lead in Eighth to Top Twins

PHI def. MIN · August 16, 2026 · Final: Phillies 7, Twins 5

Philadelphia trailed 5-0 heading into the sixth inning, a hole deep enough that the Phillies' win probability had bottomed out at 4% earlier in the afternoon. Brooks Lee's first-inning grand slam and a solo shot from Kody Clemens in the third had Minnesota sitting comfortably. Then the visitors started chipping.

In the top of the sixth, Phillies second baseman Luis Arraez grounded out to score Kyle Schwarber, cutting it to 5-1. The next batter, Philadelphia third baseman Alec Bohm, sent a fly ball to left field — a three-run home run, his 14th of the season, that brought Bryson Stott and Bryce Harper across the plate. Suddenly it was 5-4, and a game that had looked finished was very much alive.

Minnesota held that one-run edge into the eighth. Philadelphia right fielder Bryan De La Cruz and Bohm were at the center of what followed.

Bohm led off the top of the eighth with a single to right, a fly ball deflected by Twins first baseman Royce Lewis. Harper scored on the play, and a fielding error by Lewis moved Bohm to second. The game was tied at five.

De La Cruz then grounded a single to right fielder Luke Keaschall. Derek Hill scored. Bohm scored. Just like that, Philadelphia had turned a 5-0 deficit into a 7-5 lead.

The Phillies, managed by interim skipper Don Mattingly, held on from there. Final score: Philadelphia Phillies 7, Minnesota Twins 5.
