Astros Erase Five-Run Deficit With Massive Eighth-Inning Surge

HOU def. PIT · June 3, 2026 · Final: Astros 11, Pirates 9

Houston trailed 8-3 after Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Jhostynxon Garcia doubled home a run in the top of the seventh, and the Astros' win probability had sunk to 1.9% by the time Pittsburgh pushed the lead to 9-5 entering the bottom of the eighth. What the Astros did next at Minute Maid Park produced an 11-9 final.

The early signs were encouraging. Houston first baseman Yordan Alvarez singled home Nick Allen in the bottom of the third, and Astros infielder Isaac Paredes followed with a single that scored Jeremy Peña, putting Houston up 2-0. Then Pirates catcher Henry Davis erased that lead entirely with a grand slam in the top of the fourth, a four-run swing that put Pittsburgh ahead 4-2.

Houston chipped away. Astros outfielder Cam Smith's single in the bottom of the fifth scored Peña to make it 4-3. Pittsburgh answered with a run in the sixth and then two more in the seventh — Pirates infielder Nick Gonzales hit a two-run home run, and Garcia's double made it 8-3. Paredes pulled two runs back with a home run to left field in the bottom of the seventh, Alvarez scoring ahead of him, trimming it to 8-5. Gonzales added a run for Pittsburgh in the top of the eighth to push the margin to 9-5.

Then Houston's eighth inning began. Astros catcher Christian Vázquez doubled home Allen to make it 9-6. Alvarez singled home Vázquez. Astros first baseman Christian Walker's single scored Peña — a throwing error on the play moved Zach Cole to third. A wild pitch during Paredes' at-bat allowed Cole to score and tie it at 9-9.

Smith, Houston's right fielder, then lined a triple to right, scoring Walker and Paredes. Houston 11, Pittsburgh 9.
