Rockies Bullpen Surrenders Eight Runs as Milwaukee Rallies from Extras

Ryan Feltner did what a pitcher is supposed to do — kept the damage minimal, retired the side cleanly in the sixth, and left Colorado with a lead. One hit allowed, four strikeouts, 81 pitches across six innings. Feltner's 13.5 pitches per frame kept him efficient and gave manager Warren Schaeffer options heading into the back half. The Rockies went to the bullpen with a 3-1 advantage. What they got back was a 9-7 loss in ten innings.

The lead itself was built carefully. Colorado's Hunter Goodman launched his 16th home run of the season to left field in the bottom of the third, putting the Rockies up 3-1. Tyler Freeman had driven in the first run with a first-inning groundout, and Edouard Julien's second-inning single to left had given Milwaukee a brief 2-1 edge before Goodman's shot swung it back.

Colorado reliever Jaden Hill handled the seventh cleanly — a strikeout, a groundout, a walk to Brewers outfielder Sal Frelick, and a force out to end the threat. The hold looked routine.

Then Antonio Senzatela took the eighth. Three strikeouts — David Hamilton, Christian Yelich, Jackson Chourio — made it look easy. The ninth did not.

Brice Turang led off with a single to left. William Contreras reached on a fielder's choice, and Turang advanced to third on a throwing error by Senzatela himself. Jake Bauers lined a sharp single to center, scoring Turang to make it 3-2. After Mitchell struck out, Frelick hit a ground ball to center that scored Blake Perkins and sent Bauers to third — a double that tied it at three. Then Andrew Vaughn grounded a single through center, scoring both Bauers and Frelick. Milwaukee led 5-3, and Senzatela's night was done.

Brennan Bernardino got Christian Yelich to ground out and end the ninth, but the Rockies trailed. Colorado's offense answered in the top of the tenth — Chad Stevens drew a walk that scored Sterlin Thompson, and Hunter Goodman's sacrifice fly to right brought in Braxton Fulford. Tied at five heading to the top of the tenth.

Juan Mejia came on for Colorado and walked Brice Turang, then walked Gary Sánchez to load the bases after Chourio struck out. Jake Bauers lined a sharp double to center — Yelich and Turang both scored, Sánchez held at third. Garrett Mitchell singled to left to score Sánchez, and Frelick followed with a single to right that scored Bauers. Four runs on three hits, two walks, and Milwaukee led 9-5.

The Rockies got two back in the bottom of the tenth on Sterlin Thompson's line-drive single to center that scored Troy Johnston and Willi Castro, but the final was 9-7.

Senzatela's line — four hits, four runs (three earned), four strikeouts in 1.2 innings — carries the collapse story. Mejia's 22-pitch, four-run tenth is the chapter that closed it. Eight bullpen runs in four innings, with the Rockies holding a two-run lead when the handoff began.

Whether Senzatela recovers his eighth-inning command in a week is a question for another night. Whether this version of the Rockies bullpen can protect leads in the seventh through ninth is the question that doesn't wait.
